Aww, this is quite nice.
TW: Hate crimes
Clément Méric, an 18-year-old college student and gay rights activist in France, was murdered by far-right skinheads at a train station in Paris yesterday. What’s worse is that anti-gay activists say France’s newly-passed marriage equality law is the reason for his death and the slew of other anti-gay attacks becoming more frequent in France.
First it was France’s top Catholic official giving a creepy statement that seemed to justify the violence, and threaten more, while claiming to condemn it.
Then it was a statement from Barjot herself, which to some ears seemed to sound like a threat for more violence.
“[French President] Hollande wants blood, and he’s going to get it. Everyone is furious. We live in a dictatorship.”
And now, in response to the attack on young Clément Méric, Barjot has penned a piece that again denounces the violence, but then turns around and, incredibly, blames gay marriage supporters for the right-wing’s murder of this young man. Here’s Barjot:
“This extreme fight is the result of a power that for nine months has refused to listen to the French people. The President has caused extremism to grow by passing a law that the French didn’t want, and in a manner that was authoritarian and undemocratic. When we refuse to act like a democracy, extremism grows. In a way, you could say that there was a death because of this denial of democracy.”
Sickening. Rest peacefully, Clément.
Remember a few months ago when Marine Captain Matthew Phelps proposed to his boyfriend, Ben Schock, inside the White House and he said yes?
Well, they tied the knot this past weekend!
gives me hope.
Awwwwwwwww. Also, I love the black pants.
The text reads:
Keith Haring was one of the great pop artists of the 1980s. Early on, his art was seen on the subway walls and streets of NY. He worked at an unimaginable pace. Due to his talent, ingenuity and the universal themes he addressed, his work went on to be shown in galleries and museums around the world. Despite his untimely death in 1990, the popularity of his art continues unabated to this day.

Am I totally out of line if I’m really pissed off about this?
Keith Haring didn’t just have an untimely death, he was an OPENLY GAY ARTIST/AIDS ACTIVIST WHO DIED OF AIDS IN 1990. And you’re not even giving some proceeds to AIDS? The Keith Haring Foundation is one he set up before he died for the explicit purpose of using his artwork imagery to raise money for AIDS Foundations. I’m sure they had to pay licensing fees to make this shirt, but to not mention the AIDS thing AT ALL, feels like Reagan-era ignorance.

lolololol. ARE WE SURE WE WANT THIS “MARRIAGE” THING?

The cover for the June issue of The Atlantic shows a (presumably married) same-sex couple holding hands, teasing an article about why same-sex unions tend to be happier than heterosexual marriages. The cover art might not be as shocking as Time magazine’s marriage equality covers a couple months back, but the story might be even stronger. Read the article here.
Same-sex spouses, who cannot divide their labor based on preexisting gender norms, must approach marriage differently than their heterosexual peers. From sex to fighting, from child-rearing to chores, they must hammer out every last detail of domestic life without falling back on assumptions about who will do what. In this regard, they provide an example that can be enlightening to all couples. Critics warn of an institution rendered “genderless.” But if a genderless marriage is a marriage in which the wife is not automatically expected to be responsible for school forms and child care and dinner preparation and birthday parties and midnight feedings and holiday shopping, I think it’s fair to say that many heterosexual women would cry “Bring it on!”
George Takei responds to “traditional” marriage fans.
lol, I’ve been waiting for a blog version of this. I don’t even understand the last guy’s…
“Every day, Allen wakes up and looks around, and he sees guys he wants to have sex with — and he doesn’t have sex with them because he’s following Jesus,” the male administrator said. “And every day, I wake up, and I see girls I want to have sex with — and I don’t have sex with them because I’m following Jesus. So, we’re both not getting any because we’re following Jesus.”
Sure.
After more than three-fifths of delegates to the Boy Scouts of America’s National Council voted Thursday to lift the organization’s ban on openly gay youth — a move that preserved the ban on LGBT adult leaders and volunteers — groups ranging from GLAAD to the LDS Church embraced the change. But several of the most […]I just want to say that it’s pretty unique for an organization to find a way to piss EVERYONE off: liberals are mad that adult gays still aren’t allowed, and conservatives are mad that young gays ARE allowed. It’s a beautiful thing.
The Republican nominee for lieutenant governor of Virginia thinks gays are “ikky.” And, like, a zillion other terrible things.
Yuk!
lol, this man is RIDICULOUS.
